A lot of people who talk about trying to lose weight, especially once they hit 40 years of age, complain about how challenging it can be. Many believe that a muffin top is inevitable. On the positive side of things, there are others who strongly believe that there are steps that can be taken to lose weight regardless of a person’s age. Once a person hits 40, their body becomes more resistant to insulin. But none of these things mean that losing weight over 40 is a hopeless endeavor. It requires effort, and it requires clean eating, clean living, and a little bit of working out. The way aging affects a person is a mixture of nature and nurture. If someone is constantly hitting the gym, constantly lifting weights, and constantly controlling their diet, the result is going to be a healthier metabolism, regardless of how old they are.
Losing muscle as as one gets older is virtually inevitable. However, the more protein a person eats, the less muscle they’re going to lose. The more muscle a person holds onto, the faster their body is going to burn calories. Muscles consume calories like an oven. This muscle burning of calories improves a person’s insulin sensitivity, helps them create more testosterone, and helps them stave off the slowing down of their metabolism that is often associated with putting on those extra pounds.
Is losing weight after 40 hard? Yes. But losing weight at any age is hard. However, with the right focus and a little bit of effort, weight loss after 40 is definitely possible.
