Pack Light but Pack Necessities
Too many accessories can weigh you down. Combine a heavy backpack with a too-hot summertime, and you have a dangerous combo that could take you down. Literally. Pack only what you absolutely need, such as an extra water canteen, healthy snacks, and emergency items. Invest in a portable water filter to purify any water you find. One of the most important ways to keep cool in summer heat—you should always wear light, breezy clothes for your hikes. Make sure your apparel is durable, like a pair of the best hot weather boot socks, or a very lightweight jacket in your backpack to protect your skin from direct sunlight. You should be able to feel the breeze, while remaining comfortable and cool.
From bears, to steep terrain, there are always unexpected scenarios that you should expect, even on designated hiking trails. Plan for these, but in a realistic way. Don’t go overboard in your purchase of bear sprays or whatever else the salesman tries to shove at you. Instead, be smart about your trails, pack for the summertime weather, and take plenty of breaks to replenish your energies. Use common sense to keep yourself comfortable and safe.
