Exercise Prevents Osteoporosis

Primary osteoporosis is a pathologic process involving gradual loss of bone mineral content. Even in the presence of adequate nutritional sources of calcium and phosphorous, most women over 35 begin to lose bone mineral reserve at the rate of 1 percent to 1.5 percent per year. Unfortunately, like post menopausal women, women who experience exercise induced amenorrhea are clearly at risk for gradual demineralization of bone. Regular exercise otherwise has a positive effects on calcium balance in women during the years around menopause.
